Certain categories of pensioners in Ukraine are entitled to a 20% increase in their pension payments. This benefit applies to individuals who live or work in designated mountainous areas and meet specific legal requirements.
The entitlement is предусмотрено by the Law of Ukraine “On the Status of Mountainous Settlements in Ukraine.” In 2026, the scope of eligible recipients was expanded. According to Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 225, internally displaced persons (IDPs) may now also qualify for the increase.
To receive the additional payment, a pensioner must reside or work in a mountainous settlement for at least six consecutive months. They must also remain within Ukraine and not pay the unified social contribution (SSC) in another locality, unless they фактично reside in the mountainous area.
The supplement is granted upon submission of an application to the Pension Fund of Ukraine.
At the same time, the benefit may be revoked under certain conditions. These include prolonged absence from the mountainous area, staying abroad for more than 60 consecutive days without valid reasons, receiving pension or social payments elsewhere, or paying SSC outside the designated mountainous region.
Thus, eligibility for the 20% pension increase depends not only on formal status but also on the actual place of residence or employment, which must be properly documented.
