Lawyers are invited to participate in the selection process for the International Criminal Court

A competition has been announced to select Ukraine’s candidate for the position of judge at the International Criminal Court.

On January 1, 2025, Ukraine became a full-fledged party to the Rome Statute, under which each State Party may nominate one candidate to the International Criminal Court.

Presidential Decree No. 206/2026 of February 26, 2026, established the national procedure for nominating a candidate for election to the International Criminal Court. This Decree also formed a selection committee comprising renowned experts in criminal law and procedure, as well as international law.

On March 2, 2026, the first meeting of the selection committee established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine took place. Mykhailo Buromenskyi, a corresponding member of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine and professor at the Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, was elected chair of the selection committee.

The selection committee immediately announced the start of the competitive selection process for candidates to be nominated by Ukraine for election as a judge of the International Criminal Court. The relevant announcement has been posted on the website of the Official Internet Representation of the President of Ukraine.

The submission of documents will take place from March 3 to March 16, 2026 (inclusive).

Lawyers with recognized expertise in the fields of criminal law, criminal procedural law, and international law are invited to participate in the competition to represent Ukraine at the International Criminal Court.
