5G testing was launched in Kyiv: where the network is already working and what speed users will receive

Testing of fifth-generation (5G) mobile communications has begun in the capital. Kyiv has become the fourth Ukrainian city to launch a pilot network of the new communication standard. This was reported by the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.

Previously, the technology was already tested in Lviv, Kharkiv, and Borodyanka. According to the Ministry of Digital Transformation, almost 1.5 million subscribers have already used the opportunity to use the 5G network during pilot projects.

Where 5G is already working in Kyiv

Currently, the fifth-generation network is available only in certain areas of the capital. Coverage covers the central part of the city – from Maidan Nezalezhnosti to Bessarabskaya Square, as well as a number of test locations of mobile operators.

To connect to 5G, you do not need to change your SIM card. All you need to do is:

have a smartphone with 5G support;

be in the coverage area;

enable 5G support in the phone settings.

The Ministry of Digital Affairs also warns that in power saving mode, access to the next-generation network may be limited.

What speed does the new standard provide

During testing in Ukraine, the average data transfer speed is about 500 Mbps, and in some cases exceeds 1 Gbps.

In addition to significantly higher speed, 5G provides lower signal latency, which improves the operation of online services, video communication, cloud services and other applications that operate in real time.

Why is 5G being launched gradually

The Ministry of Digital Affairs explains that the phased implementation allows you to test the operation of the equipment, assess the stability of the network under load and improve the infrastructure before a full-scale launch.

Based on the results of previous pilot projects, mobile operators have already gained practical experience in deploying networks in various conditions – from historical city centers and railway stations to front-line areas and small communities.

The next city where they plan to test the 5G network will be Odesa.

Currently, more than 300 5G base stations are already operating in Ukraine, and the full implementation of the new generation network throughout the country is planned after the end of martial law.
