Chinese hacking groups are increasingly using artificial intelligence to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in computer networks. Dutch intelligence agencies predict a significant increase in the number of such cyberattacks and urge organizations to strengthen the protection of information systems.

Artificial intelligence speeds up the work of hackers

According to Dutch intelligence agencies, the use of artificial intelligence allows cybercriminals to find weaknesses in software much faster and use them to gain unauthorized access to information systems.

The Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) and the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD) have warned of the growing threat.

The defense minister stressed that the recommendations of the intelligence agencies should help citizens and businesses more effectively counter cyber threats.

Which devices are at risk

Chinese hackers pay particular attention to network equipment that connects internal information systems to external networks.

Potential targets include:

Firewalls — systems that monitor network traffic and protect against unauthorized access.

VPN gateways — equipment for organizing secure remote connections.

Network portals — systems through which users gain access to corporate resources.

Other peripheral network devices (edge devices) connected to the Internet.

Such equipment can become an entry point to an organization’s internal network if there are unpatched vulnerabilities.

Hackers can access closed source software

According to Dutch intelligence, Chinese hacking groups have deep knowledge of Western hardware and software.

They examine the operation of the relevant systems in detail, and in some cases gain access to confidential source code.

This allows them to identify vulnerabilities that hardware and software manufacturers may not even be aware of.

The use of artificial intelligence further speeds up the analysis of systems and the search for ways to exploit identified security flaws.

Intelligence predicts an increase in the number of cyberattacks

The AIVD and MIVD note that in recent years, Chinese hackers have repeatedly used vulnerabilities in network devices to attack organizations, particularly in the Netherlands.

According to estimates by the intelligence services, the number of such incidents may increase significantly.

At the same time, the use of artificial intelligence creates additional challenges for cybersecurity systems, as it reduces the time needed for attackers to find and exploit vulnerabilities.

How to protect yourself from cyberattacks

Dutch intelligence services recommend that businesses, government agencies and other organizations strengthen cyber defense measures.

In particular, experts advise:

Install security updates for software and network equipment in a timely manner.

Use multi-level mechanisms for protecting information systems.
Implement two-factor authentication for access to corporate resources.
Pay special attention to protecting devices that provide external access to internal networks.

Dutch intelligence emphasizes that timely elimination of vulnerabilities and a comprehensive approach to cybersecurity are important conditions for countering new threats.

The use of artificial intelligence by hacker groups indicates a change in the methods of carrying out cyberattacks and the need for constant improvement of digital protection systems.
