The Democratic Party of the United States has won at least 51 seats in the Senate according to the preliminary results of the midterm elections to Congress, which were held on November 3, 2026. At the same time, the counting of votes is ongoing, and the final distribution of seats in the House of Representatives remains unknown.
This is reported by the Associated Press.
According to published data, as of 6:45 Kyiv time, the Democratic Party had 51 seats in the Senate, while the Republican Party had 39. The results of ten more races remained uncertain.
These figures take into account not only the candidates elected during the current vote, but also senators whose terms are continuing.
Before the midterm elections, Republicans controlled both chambers of the US Congress.
What is known about the elections to the House of Representatives
In parallel, the counting of votes in the elections to the House of Representatives is underway in the United States.
According to preliminary data from the Associated Press, 163 Democratic candidates and 103 Republicans won.
To gain control of the lower house of Congress, a political force needs to win at least 218 of the 435 seats.
Therefore, the final distribution of political forces in the House of Representatives has not yet been determined.
Results of the governorship elections
At the same time as the congressional elections, Americans elected governors in a number of states.
According to the AP, Democrats won in 22 states, and Republicans in 11. These figures reflect the total number of governorships that are taken into account in the corresponding calculation, and not just the results of this year’s vote.
How the election results will affect US politics
A change in the majority in the Senate could significantly affect the work of Congress and the interaction of the legislative branch with the administration of President Donald Trump.
The Senate plays an important role in confirming high-ranking officials, federal judges, considering legislative initiatives, and foreign policy issues.
At the same time, the support of both houses of Congress is required for the adoption of most federal laws.
The final political consequences of the midterm elections will become clear after the vote count is completed and the composition of the House of Representatives is determined.
