Despite a full-scale war, economic instability and a shrinking pig population, Ukraine continues to attract foreign investment in livestock farming. Investors are investing tens of millions of dollars in the construction of pig farms, while large agricultural enterprises are gradually increasing their market share.
The pig population in Ukraine has decreased significantly
As of early September 2026, there were approximately 4.6 million pigs in Ukraine.
This is 4% less than in the same period in 2025. If we compare it with the indicators of a decade ago, the reduction is about 35%.
Thus, over the past decade, Ukrainian pig farming has lost more than a third of its population.
At the same time, the decrease in the total number of animals does not mean that all market participants are experiencing the same difficulties.
Opposite trends are observed in the industry: private farms are reducing livestock, while industrial producers are strengthening their positions.
Large agricultural companies control 72% of the livestock
According to the data provided, today about 72% of all pigs in Ukraine are raised by large agricultural enterprises.
These are companies that keep thousands or tens of thousands of animals and operate on an industrial scale.
At the same time, the share of private farms in the population is gradually decreasing.
This indicates structural changes in the market: pork production is increasingly concentrated in large enterprises.
Industrial producers have more opportunities to develop large-scale livestock complexes, modernize production facilities and attract capital.
It is this transformation of the industry that is one of the factors that supports the interest of investors in Ukrainian pig farming.
Why Foreigners Invest in Pig Farms Despite the War
Despite the war risks, foreign investors continue to invest in the construction of new pig farms.
According to specialized publications, the volume of such investments reaches tens of millions of dollars.
One of the reasons for investment activity is the redistribution of the market in favor of industrial producers.
As the livestock population in the private sector decreases, large companies gain opportunities to expand production and strengthen their positions.
Investments in modern pig farms can also contribute to increasing production efficiency and updating the technological base of enterprises.
At the same time, the report does not specify the names of foreign investors, specific amounts of individual projects and the timing of commissioning new complexes.
What is happening to private farms
Unlike the industrial sector, households continue to reduce the number of pigs.
As a result, the structure of the entire Ukrainian pork market is changing.
If previously private farms played a more significant role in ensuring domestic production, now an increasing part of the livestock is concentrated on large farms.
This trend means that the further development of the industry will increasingly depend on the investment opportunities of agricultural companies and the work of industrial complexes.
What are the prospects for Ukrainian pig farming
The above indicators demonstrate an ambiguous situation in the industry.
On the one hand, the total pig population in Ukraine continues to decrease. On the other hand, industrial production remains attractive for investment even in conditions of full-scale war.
The growing role of large producers can contribute to the modernization of pig farming and the development of modern livestock enterprises.
However, the fact of attracting investment does not yet mean the restoration of the total livestock population to pre-war indicators.
