Former head of the Patrol Police Department of the National Police of Ukraine Yevheniy Zhukov has been appointed advisor to the head of the National Police. This was reported by hromadske with reference to the statement of the Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko.

Zhukov took up the new position after resigning on April 19 amid public outcry over the actions of patrol officers during the shooting in Kyiv.

Focus — police participation in the war

According to the minister, in his new position Zhukov will be responsible for the issue of involving police officers in hostilities.

Klymenko emphasized that he highly appreciates the general’s professional qualities and his combat experience:

“This is a person who was involved in war. “Predator” fights excellently. But it was morally difficult to remain in office after the mistake of his subordinates.”

At the same time, he noted that Zhukov made the decision to resign on his own, but it was important to keep him in the team.

Large-scale personnel changes after the incident

After the incident in Kyiv, the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs initiated personnel decisions in the police system.

According to Klymenko, the entire vertical of the capital’s patrol police was dismissed – from the platoon commander to the head of the department. At the same time, he did not rule out further personnel changes.

Separately, the minister emphasized a new approach to appointments:

“My demand is to appoint deputies for service training only from among those who have combat experience.”

What caused the resignation

The reason for the resonance was a video that appeared on social networks: in it, two patrol officers left the scene of the incident during a shooting in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, effectively abandoning the child.

After the recording was published:

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine initiated the opening of a case
The State Bureau of Investigation began an investigation
