MEP Raphael Glucksmann, known for his support of Ukraine and criticism of Russian aggression, won a convincing victory in the social democrat primaries in France. He received more than 66% of the vote and became a candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

The results of the primaries: Glucksmann was ahead of the competition

According to the given data, 120,787 out of approximately 140,000 registered voters took part in intra-party voting.

The leader of the Place publique political movement, Raphael Glucksmann, received more than 66% of the vote, far ahead of other contenders.

His closest competitor, Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure, scored 14%. Former French presidential candidate Ségolène Royal received less than 8%, while Jerome Gage and Emmanuel Morel received around 6% each.

This result proved the significant support of Glucksmann among the participants of the primaries on the eve of the presidential campaign.

Why Glucksmann’s candidacy is important for Ukraine

Raphael Glucksmann consistently speaks in support of Ukraine and European security. He repeatedly criticized the Kremlin’s policy and emphasized the need to counter Russian aggression.

The politician is convinced that the Western countries made a strategic mistake when, for many years, they did not sufficiently respond to the warnings of Russian human rights defenders about Vladimir Putin’s authoritarian policy.

Glucksmann is connected to Ukraine not only by his political position, but also by his family history: his grandfather came from Chernivtsi.

In addition, the politician has experience working in the post-Soviet region. In 2008–2012, he lived in Tbilisi and worked as an adviser to the then president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, supporting the European integration of the country.

Glucksmann was also involved in documentaries. In particular, he created the film “Orange 2004”, dedicated to the Orange Revolution in Ukraine.

Political views and family history

Raphael Glucksmann is the son of the famous French philosopher Andre Glucksmann, who criticized totalitarian regimes and Russian politics.

Glucksmann Sr. actively supported the Chechen people during the Russo-Chechen wars, visited Chechnya and drew the attention of the French public to the actions of the Russian authorities.

Raphael Glucksmann himself continues the tradition of political criticism of authoritarianism, advocating the protection of democratic values and strengthening the role of Europe in international politics.

What will the French elections mean for Europe?

The presidential elections in France, scheduled for 2027, may significantly affect the country’s future foreign policy course.

France remains one of the key members of the European Union and NATO, so the position of its future president on the Russian-Ukrainian war will be important for further support for Ukraine.

At the same time, Glucksmann’s victory in the primaries does not yet mean victory in the national elections. He will have to compete with candidates from other political forces.

For Ukraine, the participation in the presidential race of a politician who openly supports Ukrainian sovereignty and opposes Russian aggression can become an important factor in future Ukrainian-French relations.
