Greece moves Patriot to Crete due to threat of Iranian strikes on US facilities in Europe

Greece has decided to return the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system to the island of Crete amid reports of possible Iranian strikes on American military facilities in Europe. The island is home to a strategically important US base in the Bay of Souda.

The decision to relocate the air defense system was approved by the Greek government, Euractiv reports.

The Patriot will be returned to Crete from the island of Karpathos, where the system was moved in March 2025. Karpathos is located between Crete and the Turkish coast.

The relocation was then carried out after missile launches by the Hezbollah group towards British military bases in Cyprus.

Why is the Patriot being returned now

Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis said that the previous relocation of the complex was carried out for “operational reasons” to protect the Greek islands.

The current decision to return the system to Crete came after reports of a potential threat to US military facilities in southeastern Europe.

According to the Financial Times, citing sources, Iran is allegedly considering attacks on US forces in Europe in the event of further escalation by Washington.

Media reports mentioned US facilities in Bulgaria and Cyprus as possible targets.

Crete is home to an important US military facility

Crete’s special significance is linked to the military infrastructure in the Bay of Souda.

A strategic US facility is located there, which plays an important role in ensuring the American and generally Western military presence in the Mediterranean and southeastern Europe.

Amid reports of potential Iranian strikes, Greek media reported last week that Athens was considering strengthening Crete’s air defenses.

Now the government has effectively agreed to return Patriot there.

Thus, Greece is strengthening the defense of the strategic island amid the risk of expanding the confrontation between Iran and the United States beyond the Middle East and a potential threat to American military facilities in Europe.
