2 min to read

A petition has been registered on the government portal calling for the introduction of a new tax benefit for military personnel who have the status of a participant in hostilities. The author of the initiative proposes to completely exempt defenders from paying real estate tax for the so-called “excess square meters”.

Who may be eligible for the benefit

These are military personnel mobilized since 2014 who have received the status of a UBD.

The author of the petition emphasizes that people who participated in hostilities and defended the state should have additional social guarantees and support, including in the field of taxation.

It is also proposed to extend the benefit to:

families of deceased servicemen;

families of wounded defenders;

relatives of prisoners of war and missing servicemen.
How the tax is currently calculated

Currently, in Ukraine, real estate tax is paid by owners of housing whose area exceeds the established norms:

for apartments – over 60 square meters;

for houses – over 120 square meters.

The amount of the tax is determined by local governments, and the calculation is carried out annually.

What is proposed to be changed

The author of the petition considers it unfair to collect additional taxes from military personnel who participated in hostilities.

If the initiative is supported and the required number of votes is obtained, the government will be obliged to consider the possibility of making appropriate changes to the tax legislation.
