NATO has declared its readiness to defend allies amid reports that Iran is allegedly considering strikes on American military facilities in Europe. Potential targets, according to Western media, could be facilities in the southeast of the continent.
This was reported by CNN and the Financial Times.
NATO has declared its readiness for threats
A representative of the North Atlantic Alliance stressed that NATO is ready to confront potential threats and will take the necessary measures to protect member states.
The Alliance recalled that in early 2026, NATO air defense systems intercepted ballistic missiles flying from Iranian territory towards Turkey four times.
According to a NATO representative, this demonstrates the effectiveness of the Alliance’s deterrence and defense system.
Iran allegedly considered strikes on US bases
According to the Financial Times, Tehran allegedly considered the possibility of attacks on US military facilities in the countries of Southeastern Europe.
Such a scenario could be implemented in the event of further escalation of the confrontation with the United States.
This is specifically about the US military infrastructure located in the territory of European countries, and not about the declared plans to attack Europe in general.
Which countries are named among the potential targets
Bulgaria is named as one of the possible targets. In July, the country allowed the use of the Bezmer air base for refueling US military aircraft.
The publication also mentions Cyprus, where British military infrastructure is located. In March, a British air base on the island was already attacked by a strike drone.
There is currently no official confirmation that Iran has decided to carry out such attacks.
Tensions between the US and Iran are rising
Reports of possible strike scenarios have emerged amid renewed escalation between Washington and Tehran.
On August 18, US President Donald Trump published a map on which the Strait of Hormuz was marked as “new US territory”.
It is further escalation from Washington, according to the Financial Times, that may become the condition under which Tehran will consider raising the stakes.
Against this background, NATO is making it clear that in the event of a real threat to the territory of member states, the Alliance is ready to respond and ensure their protection.
