The National Bank of Ukraine continues to carry out large-scale foreign exchange interventions on the interbank market. During October 12–16, the regulator sold over $1.2 billion, while the volume of currency purchases remained insignificant.

This was reported by Economic Truth, citing statistics from the National Bank of Ukraine.

According to published data, during the week from October 12 to 16, the NBU sold $1,249.88 million on the interbank foreign exchange market.

This is $1.06 million less compared to the previous week.

At the same time, the National Bank purchased only $300,000, which is $293,000 more than the week before.

Thus, the volume of foreign currency sales significantly exceeded its purchase. The regulator’s net sale of currency during this period amounted to about $1.25 billion.

Why does the National Bank sell currency

Foreign exchange interventions are one of the tools of the National Bank to smooth out excessive exchange rate fluctuations and maintain the stability of the foreign exchange market.

Selling dollars allows you to increase the supply of foreign currency on the interbank market when demand for it exceeds supply.

Recall that on October 2, 2023, the National Bank announced the abandonment of the fixed hryvnia exchange rate regime.

From October 3, 2023, the official dollar exchange rate began to change for the first time since July 2022. Since then, the NBU has been applying a managed exchange rate flexibility regime.

What is happening with the euro exchange rate

As of Monday, October 19, 2026, the National Bank set the official euro exchange rate at 50.49 hryvnias.

Compared to the previous indicator, the European currency has appreciated by 19 kopecks.
