Newly appointed British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that one of his first steps in office will be a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He assured that London’s policy of supporting Ukraine will remain unchanged.

Burnham said this during his first speech at Downing Street after officially taking office.

“There will be no change”

According to the new head of the British government, in a conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky, he will confirm that the United Kingdom will continue to support Ukraine.

“Today I will tell President Zelensky very clearly that there is no change. I will be with him 100%, as will Keir Starmer,” Burnham said.

He also said that after the conversation with Zelensky, he plans to talk to US President Donald Trump.

Support for Ukraine remains a priority

Burnham stressed that he has experience of cooperation with Ukrainian cities since his time as mayor of Greater Manchester. According to him, this experience will help him in fulfilling his new responsibilities.

“President Zelenskyy will have no doubt that the support of the United Kingdom is unwavering. It will be there for him, and I will be there for him personally,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

Britain’s security is linked to Ukraine

Earlier, Andy Burnham had already stated that he would continue the course of his predecessor Keir Starmer regarding comprehensive support for Ukraine.

He emphasized that among the main priorities of his government would be strengthening the national security of the United Kingdom, developing cooperation with European allies and further assisting Ukraine in confronting Russian aggression.

According to Burnham, the security of the United Kingdom and the entire Euro-Atlantic community directly depends on the events taking place in Ukraine.
