Preparing a child for first grade in 2026 will cost Ukrainian families an average of 10,000 to 12,000 hryvnias. The main expenses are for the purchase of school clothes, shoes, a backpack, and stationery. At the same time, part of these expenses can be compensated thanks to the state program “Student Package”.
According to experts, the smallest share of the budget is stationery. A full set of notebooks, pens, pencils, paints, plasticine, albums, covers, and other necessary items will cost from 1,000 to 2,500 hryvnias.
A significant expense item is the purchase of a school backpack. Budget models start at 700–1,000 hryvnias, while a high-quality orthopedic backpack for a first-grader can cost from 1,200 to 3,500 hryvnias. Experts recommend choosing models with an anatomical back, wide straps, and reflective elements.
The school wardrobe requires the greatest expenses. A basic set of clothes for a first-grader is estimated at at least 5 thousand UAH. Another 1.5–3.5 thousand UAH must be provided for seasonal shoes, and a sports uniform and changeable shoes for physical education lessons will cost another 1–2.5 thousand UAH.
State aid — 5 thousand UAH
The state program “Student Package” is designed to reduce the financial burden. In 2026, families whose children are going to school for the first time can receive a one-time payment of 5,000 UAH.
The funds are provided in non-cash form and can be used exclusively for the purchase of goods necessary for education, including school supplies, books, clothes and shoes. The payment can be used only in Ukrainian retail establishments.
How to apply for a payment
To receive assistance, as a rule, you must submit:
child’s birth certificate;
passport of one of the parents or legal representative;
a document confirming the child’s enrollment in the first grade.
You can apply through the social security authorities or the center for providing administrative services (CNAP). At the same time, the procedure for registration and the list of required documents may be specified by local governments depending on the region.
When is it more profitable to buy school supplies
Experts recommend not postponing preparations for school until the end of August, when demand traditionally increases and prices rise. The optimal solution is to gradually purchase the necessary goods in July and early August, which allows you to take advantage of promotional offers and evenly distribute the expenses of the family budget.
