According to The Sunday Times, citing data from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, in eastern Ukraine, alleged cases of cannibalism among Russian servicemen have been recorded. According to preliminary estimates, the cause of such incidents could be an acute shortage of food during the winter period.

What is known at this time

According to Ukrainian intelligence, journalists were given photographic materials and intercepted audio recordings that allegedly confirm the facts of extraordinary violations of discipline and humanitarian norms among individual units. These materials include negotiations between Russian officers, where similar cases are discussed.

At least five episodes are reported in which servicemen could have eaten the bodies of the dead. One of the most resonant cases, according to the information provided, occurred in November 2025 near Mirnograd. There, a serviceman with the call sign “Khroma” is suspected of killing his comrades and attempting to dismember the body.

Evidence and Assessments

According to reports, some of the materials have already been analyzed, including images that, according to experts, do not show signs of editing. Medical experts also note that the nature of the injuries found does not correspond to typical combat injuries and may indicate the use of cold weapons.

At the same time, the intercepted audio mentions the so-called “hunger rations” as well as orders from the command that directly prohibit such actions, along with prohibitions on the use of alcohol and narcotics.

Supply problems at the front

The Ukrainian side notes that an increasing number of captured Russian soldiers are reporting serious problems with the supply of food. This may indicate systemic difficulties in logistics and the supply of individual units.

At the same time, difficulties with supply are also recognized in certain areas of the Ukrainian side of the front, in particular in the Kupyansk area, where logistics are significantly complicated due to shelling of the crossings.
