Social assistance in the Czech Republic in 2026: who can receive payments and what amounts are provided

In the Czech Republic, there is no single fixed social benefit that all low-income citizens automatically receive. The amount of state support is determined individually depending on income, household composition, housing costs, property status and other circumstances.

The basic support system is called pomoc v hmotné nouzi — “assistance to persons in material hardship”. It is regulated by Czech law and administered by the Czech Labor Office.

What types of assistance can be received

The system provides for three main types of state support:

příspěvek na živobytí — assistance for providing accommodation;
doplatek na bydlení — housing supplement;
mimořádná okamžitá pomoc — one-time assistance in emergency life situations.

One of the main payments is příspěvek na živobytí. Its amount is not set as the same amount for all applicants.

The assistance is calculated individually, taking into account the income of a person or family and the amount necessary to meet basic living needs.

What is the subsistence minimum in the Czech Republic

When determining the right to social assistance, the indicators of the subsistence and subsistence minimum are taken into account.

As of 2026, the subsistence minimum for a person living alone is 4,860 Czech crowns per month.

The subsistence minimum is 3,130 Czech crowns per month.

The latter indicator may apply, in particular, to able-bodied persons who do not cooperate with the employment service without good reason.

At the same time, the subsistence minimum does not apply to certain categories of the population, including children, the elderly and some categories of people with disabilities.

Housing allowance

There is separate support for people whose income is not enough to cover housing costs and at the same time provide for basic needs.

Doplatek na bydlení may be assigned if, after paying rent and utilities, a person or family does not have enough money left for living.

There is also no fixed amount of such assistance. It is calculated depending on the household income and actual housing costs.

Lump-sum assistance

In difficult or extraordinary life circumstances in the Czech Republic, you can also apply for mimořádná okamžitá pomoc – extraordinary lump-sum assistance.

It can be assigned in cases where a person finds himself in a situation that he cannot overcome at his own expense.

The decision on the assignment and amount of the payment is made taking into account the specific circumstances of the applicant.

Can foreigners receive social assistance in the Czech Republic

Foreigners can also apply for certain types of social support, but residence in the Czech Republic does not mean an automatic right to payments.

You must have legal grounds for staying or residing in the country and meet the criteria provided for by Czech law for a specific type of assistance.

When considering an application, the income of all household members, property status, employment opportunities, housing costs and other social circumstances may be taken into account.

Thus, the amount of assistance in the Czech Republic is determined individually, and the subsistence minimum indicators are used primarily as a basis for assessing the applicant’s financial situation, and not as a guaranteed amount of monthly payment.
