Supreme Court to engage students in mock hearings and international legal events

The Supreme Court and ELSA Ukraine have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation, which should open up new opportunities for the professional training of law students. The planned areas include legal competitions, mock trials, familiarization with the practice of the highest judicial instance, as well as the prospect of internships or training at the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court and the All-Ukrainian public organization “European Law Students Association Ukraine” (ELSA Ukraine) have agreed to deepen cooperation in the field of legal education and professional development of young lawyers.

The relevant Memorandum of Cooperation was signed by representatives of the Supreme Court and the student law organization.

From competitions to internships at the Supreme Court

One of the key areas of cooperation will be the creation of new formats for interaction with students.

In particular, the parties plan to organize open days, legal competitions and other professional events. In the future, participants in such competitions may be provided with the opportunity to undergo internships or training at the Supreme Court.

It is also planned to hold mock court sessions, which will give students the opportunity to get acquainted with court procedures and the specifics of the judicial system in practice.

A separate direction should be the involvement of Ukrainian legal youth in international legal events.

Students will be introduced to the practice of the Supreme Court

Future lawyers are planned to be told in more detail about current judicial practice, in particular, regarding the application of European Union law.

The focus will also be on the issues of protecting social rights during a full-scale war, the peculiarities of considering war crimes cases, and other areas that are of particular importance for the Ukrainian legal system today.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Stanislav Kravchenko, emphasized that the quality of training of current students will directly affect what the legal system of Ukraine will be like in the future.

“Today’s law students will later become representatives of the legal profession – lawyers, judges, prosecutors, and scientists. It is their professional culture and training that will determine what the national legal system will be like tomorrow,” the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court noted.

According to him, the Supreme Court is interested in the development of high-quality legal education and professional training of young lawyers.

Part of the international legal community

ELSA Ukraine is part of the international network The European Law Students’ Association, which unites law students and young lawyers.

The organization is represented in 43 European countries, which also creates opportunities for involving Ukrainian students in international legal projects and professional exchange.

The signed memorandum should become the basis for more systematic interaction between the Supreme Court and the student legal community — from the first acquaintance with the work of the court to practical experience and a professional start.
