Law of Ukraine No. 1206-IX “On Veterinary Medicine and Animal Welfare” has entered into force.
This is a comprehensive update to animal health regulations that establishes a modern model of state oversight and raises animal welfare standards.
The law establishes rules for everyone—animal owners, farmers, market operators, veterinarians, and consumers.
The State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection explained what this means in practice:
- Prevention is a priority. The law strengthens the system for early detection and prevention of animal diseases. This reduces the risks of infection spread and losses for farms.
- Clear accountability and transparent procedures. The rights and obligations of market participants are defined, and approaches to state control and response to disease outbreaks have been updated.
- Higher animal welfare standards. Modern requirements for the conditions of keeping, transporting, and handling animals have been established.
- A step toward the European Union. The Law’s provisions are aligned with European approaches to animal health, opening up additional opportunities for trade and export.
