The Netherlands will transfer to Ukraine an Alkmaar-class mine countermeasure ship — Zr. Ms. Makkum, which will be named “Genichesk”. This was announced by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.

Strengthening maritime security

According to the Head of State, the transfer of the ship is scheduled for June 2026. By this time, the Dutch side will ensure full training of the Ukrainian crew.

The new ship will be the fifth in the future mine countermeasure fleet of Ukraine and the second transferred by the Netherlands.

Symbolic name

The ship will be named “Genichesk” in honor of the Ukrainian ship that was lost in June 2022 while performing a combat mission near the Kinburn Spit.

Development of cooperation

During a visit to the Netherlands on April 16, Volodymyr Zelensky, together with Prime Minister Rob Yetten, met with Ukrainian military personnel undergoing training on the basis of this ship.

The transfer of mine countermeasures vessels is part of broader international support to Ukraine in the field of security and demining of water areas, which is important for the restoration of shipping and the protection of maritime infrastructure.
