Representatives of the United States and Russia, according to media reports, held closed negotiations on the possible involvement of American investors in the Nord Stream gas pipelines. The potential agreement may provide for the resumption of Russian gas supplies to Europe after the end of the war in Ukraine.

This was reported by Femida.ua with reference to Reuters information, which was distributed by the BusinessUA publication.

Who is participating in the negotiations

According to journalists, citing five informed interlocutors, the issue of the future of the gas pipelines was discussed by a representative of the Russian leadership, Kirill Dmitriev, and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.

It is noted that in recent weeks they held meetings in Moscow and New York.

At the same time, the sources do not specify in what detail the parties discussed the Nord Stream gas pipelines. According to them, the issue remains on the agenda.

US investors may gain access to Russian gas business

According to Reuters, Kushner is considering economic cooperation as one of the possible tools for reaching agreements on ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The alleged agreement on Nord Stream could allow US companies to profit from transporting Russian gas to European countries.

In fact, we are talking about the possible involvement of American capital in the energy infrastructure, which, before the full-scale invasion of Russia, played an important role in supplying gas to Germany.

However, no confirmed agreements on the transfer of a stake in the gas pipelines or the restoration of their operation have been made public so far.

What the White House is saying

In response to a question from journalists, a representative of the US administration noted that potential economic agreements with Russia must meet American interests.

In particular, such agreements should involve the participation of the US Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and the Treasury Department, and should bring economic benefits to American companies and taxpayers.

At the same time, this position does not constitute official confirmation of the achievement of agreements on Nord Stream.

What this means for Ukraine and Europe

The possible return of Russian gas to the European market raises questions about the future energy security of the EU, sanctions policy and economic relations with Moscow.

Of particular importance for Ukraine will be whether potential energy agreements could affect international sanctions pressure on Russia and the positions of Western partners.

In addition, the resumption of gas pipeline operations will require the resolution of a number of technical, legal and political issues.

At present, information about the negotiations is based on reports by anonymous Reuters sources. There is no official decision on the resumption of Nord Stream or the participation of American investors in the project.
