The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced the beginning of the blockade of vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports.
According to the report, the restrictions will take effect on April 13 at 10:00 AM Eastern Time (17:00 Kyiv time).
Who will be affected by the restrictions
CENTCOM stated that the measures will be applied impartially to vessels of all countries that attempt to:
— enter Iranian ports;
— leave them;
— be in the coastal waters of Iran in the waters of the Arabian and Oman Gulfs.
At the same time, the American side emphasizes that it will not impede the freedom of navigation of vessels transiting through the Strait of Hormuz to or from non-Iranian ports.
Recommendations for shippers
Before the restrictions are introduced, commercial seafarers are promised to be provided with additional instructions through official channels.
Shippers are also recommended to:
— monitor the messages of the “Notice to Mariners” system;
— maintain contact with US naval forces on Channel 16 while in the Gulf of Oman and near the Strait of Hormuz.
Background to the decision
The announcement of the blockade was preceded by negotiations between the US and Iran, which did not yield any results. Against this background, Washington has strengthened control measures in the region, which is of strategic importance for world trade and energy security.
Experts note that the situation may affect international shipping and the stability of energy supplies, given the key role of the Strait of Hormuz in global logistics routes.
