The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering new proposals to end the war between Ukraine and Russia. Among the possible conditions are the creation of a demilitarized zone in the Donbas, Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO, easing sanctions against the Russian Federation and the resumption of Russian gas supplies to Europe.

This is reported by The Economist.

What the new US peace plan entails

According to media reports, the American side is considering a set of political, territorial and economic agreements that could become the basis for the cessation of hostilities.

Among the main provisions reported by journalists:

The creation of a demilitarized zone in the Donbas.
Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO in exchange for the prospect of membership in the European Union and an investment package.
Possible easing of international sanctions against Russia.
The restoration of full-fledged political relations between the Russian Federation and Western states.
Expanding economic cooperation between the US and Russia.
It is possible to resume Russian gas exports to Europe, in particular through the Nord Stream gas pipeline.

At the same time, these are unofficial proposals, and not a peace document agreed upon by Ukraine, the United States and Russia.

Russia may receive economic benefits

One of the key components of the American proposals, according to The Economist, is the possible resumption of Russia’s energy cooperation with European countries.

In particular, the return of Russian gas to the European market is being considered.

Such a scenario could provide Moscow with additional financial revenues and partially restore its influence on the energy sector in Europe.

In addition, Russia may be able to conclude new economic agreements with the United States and seek the gradual lifting of sanctions restrictions.

However, European officials, according to the publication, are cautious about such proposals.

The reason is that the European Union has been trying to reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources in recent years.

What is being offered to Ukraine in exchange for abandoning NATO

According to journalists, Ukraine may be offered the prospect of membership in the European Union and a package of investments in exchange for abandoning accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.

At the same time, the report does not specify the amount of possible financing, the terms of European integration and the mechanisms for ensuring Ukraine’s security.

The issue of guarantees that could prevent repeated Russian aggression after the conclusion of agreements also remains open.

Ukrainian negotiators are afraid of certain agreements between the US and the Russian Federation

According to The Economist, representatives of the Ukrainian side express concern about the possibility of concluding economic agreements between Washington and Moscow even before agreeing on terms acceptable to Ukraine for ending the war.

In particular, they are talking about the risk that the economic interests of the parties may take priority over the issues of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and guarantees of its security.

At the same time, journalists note that Russia may use the negotiation process to obtain concessions on sanctions without agreeing to an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Has a new peace plan been agreed?

There is currently no information that the proposals described have been officially agreed by all parties.

The Economist analyzes the possible outlines of the agreements being discussed in the context of American efforts to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Thus, the provisions on the demilitarized zone, Ukraine’s withdrawal from NATO, the easing of sanctions and the resumption of Russian gas exports remain the subject of media reports, and not the approved terms of the peace agreement.
