US President Donald Trump said that his administration is considering the possibility of restricting diesel exports from the United States. Such a step is being discussed against the background of high fuel prices in the American market. At the same time, the American president again linked the diesel shortage to Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries.

According to Trump, he discussed the issue of a possible export restriction with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright.

Why the US may restrict diesel exports

Trump suggested that reducing or stopping exports would allow more diesel fuel to remain on the domestic market and thus reduce its cost for American consumers.

At the same time, the US president acknowledged that the decision could have side effects. In particular, changes in the fuel market could affect the cost of gasoline and other goods.

A final decision on banning diesel exports has not yet been announced.

Trump again spoke about Ukraine’s attacks on Russian refineries

Separately, the US president linked the situation on the global diesel market to Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries.

According to his assessment, damage to Russian refineries significantly reduces Russia’s ability to process oil and supply finished petroleum products to the market.

Trump said that the impact of these attacks on diesel supplies, in his opinion, is even more significant than the consequences of the war in Iran.

Earlier, the US president had already called on Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian energy infrastructure and also linked them to problems in the fuel market.

Diesel in the US has risen sharply

According to Reuters data cited in the report, a week earlier the cost of diesel fuel in the US reached a record $6.53 per gallon.

The US administration also linked the situation on the market to a reduction in supplies of petroleum products from Russia. In particular, Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that damage to Russian refineries and a decrease in Russian fuel exports had affected the global market.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant also cited Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities and the war with Iran as factors in the energy crisis.

Currently, the issue of limiting US diesel exports remains under discussion. If Washington does take such a step, the decision could affect not only the US domestic market, but also international flows of petroleum products.
