Possible agreements between the administration of US President Donald Trump and Russia on the purchase of Russian diesel fuel could cause a large-scale political scandal, lawsuits and increased confrontation in Congress. In addition, Washington’s attempts to force Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries could negatively affect the position of the Republican Party on the eve of the elections.
Possible agreement with Russia may have legal consequences
According to Pincus, representatives of the Trump administration are allegedly trying to promote agreements on the supply of Russian diesel fuel to the United States. At the same time, such initiatives may contradict American legislation that restricts trade with Russia.
In particular, this concerns the restrictions on the import of Russian energy carriers introduced in 2022.
Pincus suggests that even if a 40,000-ton shipment of Russian diesel arrives in New York, American ports may refuse to accept the cargo due to the risk of fines and lawsuits.
“There will be big problems. Port owners will be fined for accepting cargo from Russia under the 2022 law,” he said.
At the same time, information about specific agreements on the purchase of Russian fuel and the possible supply of the said batch requires independent confirmation.
Restrictions against Russian energy resources may be tightened in the United States
According to Pincus, some American lawmakers oppose any initiatives that could contribute to financing the Russian economy.
He claims that Republican Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick has already secured the necessary support to advance a legislative initiative aimed at banning the purchase of Russian energy resources.
The initiative, according to the public figure, is based on the principle of “peace through strength” and involves increasing economic pressure on Moscow.
Pressure on Ukraine through attacks on Russian refineries
Pincus expressed particular criticism of representatives of the American administration, who, according to him, are trying to convince Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries.
In particular, he mentioned the US President’s special representative Steve Witkoff, whom he accused of promoting solutions beneficial to the Kremlin.
According to Pincus, limiting Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure could weaken economic pressure on Russia and negatively affect Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
At the same time, the allegations are the position of a public figure, not established facts.
Republicans risk losing control of Congress
Pincus also links possible agreements with Russia with the deterioration of the political prospects of the Republican Party.
According to his assessment, the Trump administration’s controversial foreign policy decisions may increase the dissatisfaction of American voters and legislators.
He does not rule out that, as a result of the midterm elections, Republicans may lose control of both houses of Congress.
In this case, the US presidential administration may face increased parliamentary control, political investigations, and difficulties in implementing certain foreign policy initiatives.
The midterm elections to the US Congress are scheduled for November 3, 2026. Their results may affect Washington’s further policy towards Russia, sanctions, and military support for Ukraine.
Currently, the scenarios voiced by Boris Pincus remain his political forecasts, and not confirmed decisions of the American authorities.
