The first cluster of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will be officially opened on Monday, June 15. The information was confirmed by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos during her visit to Kyiv.

The day before, she held meetings with representatives of the Ukrainian government, in particular with Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. The main topic of the negotiations was the reforms necessary for Ukraine’s further progress on the path to EU membership.

As reported by the European Commission, the official opening of the first negotiation cluster “Fundamentals” will take place during the intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg. This block includes issues of the rule of law, the work of state institutions, public procurement, financial control and statistics.

“The rule of law is one of the most important principles. Everything begins with it and everything ends with it,” emphasized Marta Kos, explaining the significance of the first stage of negotiations.

The EU emphasizes that the opening of the cluster will be an important political signal of support for Ukraine and confirmation of Kyiv’s readiness to continue large-scale European integration reforms even in conditions of war.

In parallel, Ukraine and Hungary continue consultations on issues of national minorities. According to the parties, the negotiations are proceeding constructively, and Kyiv plans to implement some of the agreements in the near future.
