After the death of a spouse, an incapacitated spouse may, under certain conditions, apply for a survivor’s pension. Such a transition may be beneficial if the amount of the new payment exceeds the pension that the person currently receives.
How much can you receive
For one incapacitated family member, the survivor’s pension is 50% of the pension at the age of the deceased breadwinner.
For example, if the estimated amount of the deceased spouse’s pension was UAH 9,000, the spouse may claim a payment of UAH 4,500.
At the same time, switching to another type of pension is not always financially beneficial. If a person’s own pension is higher, it is more expedient to remain on it.
What determines the amount of the payment
During the calculation, the data of the deceased breadwinner are taken into account, in particular his or her insurance experience and the salary from which insurance contributions were paid. The number of disabled family members who are entitled to the corresponding pension is also important.
Therefore, before switching to another type of pension, it is worth contacting the Pension Fund and clarifying the approximate amount of the future payment.
How to apply for a pension in connection with the loss of a breadwinner
The transition to another type of pension does not occur automatically. To do this, you must submit an appropriate application to the Pension Fund of Ukraine.
For registration, you may need:
the applicant’s passport and RNOKPP;
marriage certificate;
death certificate of the husband or wife;
documents necessary to confirm the insurance experience and earnings of the deceased, if the relevant information is not in the state registers.
Before submitting an application, it is worth asking the PFU specialists to make a preliminary calculation and compare the potential payment with the pension that the person already receives.
It is also important to consider that the right to a survivor’s pension is determined by law and depends on the status and circumstances of a particular family member. The fact of marriage itself does not automatically mean the assignment of 50% of the deceased’s pension.
