In Ukraine, the collection of signatures for a petition to the Cabinet of Ministers demanding a moratorium on raising tariffs for water supply and wastewater has been completed. Despite the support of more than 8 thousand citizens, the appeal did not gain the necessary number of votes for mandatory consideration by the government.
This was reported by Femida.ua with reference to the Interfax-Ukraine agency and the official portal of electronic petitions of the Cabinet of Ministers.
The petition was registered on July 6, 2026. As of October 7, it had collected about 8.1 thousand signatures out of the 25 thousand required.
What Ukrainians demanded
The author of the appeal called on the government to intervene in the situation with the increase in the cost of housing and communal services and introduce state regulation of water tariffs.
In particular, it was proposed to establish a complete moratorium on raising tariffs for centralized water supply and wastewater or to determine the maximum allowable cost of these services.
Such restrictions were proposed to be introduced for the entire period of martial law and to be extended for another six months after its end.
Separately, the petition author emphasized the need for financial support for water supply enterprises. To this end, the government was proposed to develop a mechanism for state subsidies and attracting international assistance that would allow compensating for losses of water utilities, primarily in frontline and war-affected regions.
Water tariffs are already rising
The issue of the cost of water supply remains relevant for Ukrainians against the backdrop of rising prices for electricity, fuel, and reagents necessary for the operation of water utilities.
In particular, in early September, the Kyiv City Council supported a gradual increase in tariffs for water supply and wastewater disposal. According to the Interfax-Ukraine agency, the cost of the relevant services is UAH 63.79 per cubic meter.
Will the government review the tariffs?
Since the petition did not collect the required 25,000 signatures, the Cabinet of Ministers is not obliged to consider it within the framework of the electronic petition procedure.
At the same time, this does not deprive citizens of the opportunity to re-apply to state authorities with a corresponding initiative.
Currently, the introduction of a nationwide moratorium on increasing water tariffs remains a proposal, not a government decision.
