Due to changes in Polish legislation, some Ukrainian citizens need to update their data in the PESEL register. This must be done by August 31, 2026.

At the same time, not all Ukrainians with outdated passport data automatically risk losing their UKR status. It is important to check what information is currently contained in the PESEL register.

Who should update PESEL data

Data updating applies to Ukrainian citizens with PESEL UKR status who received a PESEL number on the basis of a passport that later became invalid or was replaced.

Ukrainians who received a PESEL without a foreign passport – in particular, on the basis of a birth certificate – also need to contact the Polish authorities.

Those who, after receiving a PESEL, issued a new foreign passport or changed personal data, such as their last name, also need to update their information.

What Ukrainians need to do

To update their data, they must personally contact the municipal or city authority – Urząd gminy or Urząd miasta.

When applying, they must present a valid passport and update the information in the PESEL register. If necessary, fingerprints may also be taken.

You can contact the relevant authority at the place of residence in Poland.

By what deadline do you need to update your PESEL

You must update your data in the register by August 31, 2026.

Ukrainians who, after receiving the PESEL UKR status, have issued a new passport should pay special attention to this.

The new passport does not automatically update the information in the Polish register. To enter the current data, you must separately contact the municipal or city authority.

What parents need to know

The mandatory update of data also applies to children.

If the child received a PESEL number without a foreign passport or the passport was issued after the PESEL was assigned, the information in the register must be updated.

How to check your data in the PESEL register

Before contacting the commune authority, Ukrainians are recommended to check the information currently contained in the PESEL register.

You can do this through the state service Gov.pl in the “Sprawdź swoje dane w rejestrze PESEL” section.

For authorization, you can use Profil Zaufany, e-Dowód or another available means of electronic identification.

In the register, it is worth checking the name and surname, date of birth, citizenship, PESEL number, as well as the data of the document on the basis of which the registration was carried out.

If necessary, parents can also check the information about the child and download official confirmation from the register.

Timely checking and updating data will help to avoid possible problems with using the rights and services available to citizens of Ukraine with PESEL UKR status.
