Further Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure could cause large-scale disruptions to centralized water supply. In the event of critical damage to energy facilities, residents of individual cities could be left without water, and its delivery by special tankers would be one of the few available ways to provide the population.
Why strikes on the energy sector threaten water supply
According to the expert, centralized water supply directly depends on the stable operation of power grids. Electricity is necessary for the functioning of pumping stations that supply water to residential buildings.
In the event of large-scale damage to the energy infrastructure, utility companies may lose the ability to maintain the operation of the relevant equipment.
In such a scenario, residents of individual settlements risk being left without centralized water supply for an indefinite period.
Popenko warned that in critical conditions, local authorities will have to organize the delivery of drinking and technical water by special vehicles.
Hundreds of thousands of people were left without water in Dnipro
As an example, the expert cited the situation in Dnipro, where large-scale water supply problems arose last weekend.
According to him, several hundred thousand residents were left without water due to interruptions.
This case, according to Popenko, demonstrates the dependence of the city’s utility infrastructure on a stable power supply.
In Kyiv, water problems also arose due to power outages
Let us recall that on November 3, water supply disruptions occurred in Kyiv due to damage to the energy infrastructure.
Kyivvodokanal explained that due to the lack of electricity, part of the water supply equipment was de-energized.
Utility workers emphasized that even after the restoration of power supply, water will return to consumers gradually, since it takes some time to restore the system.
Will cities be able to provide the population with imported water?
Previously, the head of the Desnyansky district state administration of Kyiv, Maksym Bakhmatov, drew attention to the difficulty of providing the population with water in conditions of long interruptions.
According to his assessment, only for the needs of the Desnyansky district of the capital in a critical situation, about 30 million liters of water may be needed.
It is practically impossible to provide such volumes solely with the help of pump rooms and water tankers.
Thus, further attacks by Russia on energy facilities may pose threats not only to electricity supply, but also to the operation of other life support systems in cities.
At the same time, the scenarios voiced by the expert are a warning about the possible consequences of further damage to the infrastructure, and not a forecast of an inevitable cessation of water supply throughout Ukraine.
