The United Nations Security Council is convening an urgent meeting in connection with the sharp escalation of Russian attacks on the territory of Ukraine. The meeting will be held on May 19 at the request of the Ukrainian side.
This was reported by the permanent representative of Ukraine to the UN Andriy Melnyk, LB.ua reports.
According to the diplomat, the reason for the urgent meeting was Russia’s massive attacks on the civilian population and Ukrainian cities.
“On May 19, the UN Security Council, at our request, is convening an urgent meeting to consider the unprecedented escalation of Russia’s barbaric attacks on the civilian population of Ukraine,” said Andriy Melnyk.
It is expected that during the meeting, representatives of the UN member states will discuss the latest Russian shelling, the humanitarian situation in Ukraine and possible steps of the international response.
The Ukrainian side insists on increasing pressure on Russia and additional mechanisms to protect civilians against the new wave of attacks.
