The US House of Representatives is preparing for the final stage of consideration of the bill on new sanctions against Russia and Iran. The final vote on the document may take place as early as September 16. Among the proposed measures is the possibility of introducing tariffs of up to 100% against the largest buyers of Russian energy resources.
On September 14, the Rules Committee of the US House of Representatives approved the procedure for considering the bill. The decision was supported by seven members of the committee, three voted against.
Procedural debates are scheduled for September 15. A vote on the rules for considering the document is expected at approximately 20:30 Kyiv time. If they are approved, the House of Representatives will be able to proceed to the final vote, which may take place as early as September 16.
Up to 100% tariffs for buyers of Russian oil and gas
The bill provides for the possibility of the US President introducing tariffs of up to 100% against the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas.
Among the countries that could potentially be affected by such measures are China and India.
Thus, the United States can increase not only direct sanctions pressure on Russia, but also economic pressure on states that continue to purchase significant amounts of Russian energy resources.
Oligarchs, banks and the “shadow fleet” may fall under sanctions
The document also provides for the possibility of introducing restrictions against Russian oligarchs, officials, military personnel and members of their families.
In addition, sanctions may apply to financial institutions, energy projects and vessels associated with the so-called Russian “shadow fleet”.
This is a set of measures aimed at increasing economic pressure and limiting Russia’s ability to receive income from energy exports.
The Senate has already supported the bill
The document previously received support in the US Senate. In August, 86 senators voted for it, 11 against.
Now the key stage remains the vote in the House of Representatives.
If finally approved by Congress, the bill can be sent to US President Donald Trump for signature.
The day before, the US also imposed new sanctions against the Russian bank VTB as part of measures related to pressure on Iran. The US Treasury Department accused the bank of facilitating the circumvention of sanctions against Tehran.
