Chinese leader Xi Jinping did not support the idea of holding a tripartite summit involving China, the United States and Russia to discuss the war in Ukraine. In his opinion, negotiations on the settlement of the conflict should take place with the participation of European states.
This was announced by the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
During the meeting with Xi Jinping in Beijing, the German president raised the issue of possible negotiations between the leaders of China, the United States and Russia. However, the Chinese leader showed no interest in the proposed format.
According to Steinmeier, Xi Jinping emphasized that the war in Ukraine is directly related to European security, so European representatives must necessarily participate in the relevant negotiations.
“He clearly emphasized that this is a European conflict, in which Europeans should also be present at the negotiating table,” said the German president.
Steinmeier also reported that China is currently not preparing for a tripartite summit with the US and Russia on the Ukrainian issue.
Will Trump, Putin and Xi Jinping meet?
The discussion of a possible summit comes ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting scheduled for mid-November in Shenzhen, China.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to organize a tripartite meeting with the leaders of the United States and China. He called the issue of nuclear disarmament the main topic of the negotiations.
US President Donald Trump declared his readiness to consider such an initiative. At the same time, the American leader did not rule out the possibility of discussing other international issues, in particular, Russia’s war against Ukraine.
However, Xi Jinping’s position calls into question the possibility of conducting negotiations regarding Ukraine in this format.
What does this mean for Ukraine?
The Chinese leader’s statement indicates Beijing’s reluctance to support a negotiation format in which European security issues will be resolved without the participation of European representatives.
At the same time, it is currently unknown whether China is ready to join another international negotiating format regarding the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
There are currently no official agreements to hold a trilateral summit between China, the USA and Russia.
