On April 16, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky will visit the Netherlands, where he will receive the prestigious international Four Freedoms Award on behalf of the Ukrainian people in the city of Middelburg. Willem-Alexander, Beatrix and Prime Minister Rob Yetten are expected to attend the ceremony.
The Four Freedoms Award, based on the ideas of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, recognizes contributions to the protection of basic human rights – freedom of speech, religion, freedom from fear and poverty. The award to Ukraine is an important symbol of international support in the context of the ongoing war and the struggle for democratic values.
In addition to the ceremonial part, the visit also has a practical dimension. The President of Ukraine will hold talks with the Dutch government on expanding defense cooperation, including the launch of joint production of drones. A meeting with the King is also planned, during which further support for Ukraine will be discussed.
Given the recent statements by the Dutch side about financing defense projects for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, this visit may be another step towards deepening the strategic partnership between the states, which has both political and security significance for the region.
