In Ukraine, the state program “Affordable Medicines” is being expanded on an extraordinary basis. This was announced by the head of the relevant parliamentary committee, Mykhailo Radutsky.

The key changes concern patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus – for the first time, the program will include modern drugs from the gliflozin group, in particular dapagliflozin and empagliflozin.

Modern treatment with partial compensation

According to Radutsky, these drugs are the “gold standard” in world medicine, as they not only control sugar levels, but also reduce the risks of heart and kidney damage.

For the first time, the state is introducing a mechanism for reimbursement of 50% of the cost for original drugs in this group.

New drugs for the prevention of complications

In addition to diabetes drugs, the program will include:

— new oral anticoagulants;

— drugs for the prevention of strokes, heart attacks and thrombosis.

Manufacturers are expected to submit applications by April 21, after which an updated list of available drugs will be formed.

Further expansion steps

The parliament is also working on further expanding the program. In particular, the possibility of:

— including test strips for monitoring sugar levels;
— introducing completely free insulin for people over 60 years of age is being considered.

How to obtain medication

The mechanism for obtaining drugs remains unchanged: the patient must receive an electronic prescription from a doctor and contact a pharmacy that cooperates with the National Health Service of Ukraine.

The expansion of the program should increase the availability of modern treatment and reduce the risks of serious complications for millions of Ukrainians.
