The Verkhovna Rada suspended plenary sessions until October: Stefanchuk explained the reason

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will not hold plenary sessions until early October. Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk assures that this is not about the deputies’ “vacation” — work continues in parliamentary committees.

According to Stefanchuk, now the people’s deputies must work on the bills that the parliament supported in the first reading during the last plenary weeks and prepare them for the second reading.

A significant part of this work is taking place in the specialized committees.

“The work of the Ukrainian parliament is not only work in the hall. It also takes place in the committees, and this is the main work, where we have to work on the bills and prepare the bills for the second reading,” the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada explained.

In particular, the parliamentarians are waiting for the receipt of amendments to the bills that were recently adopted as a basis. In addition, the Verkhovna Rada is waiting for new legislative initiatives from the Cabinet of Ministers.

Stefanchuk stressed that after the relevant work in the committees, the parliament will be able to return to considering a significant number of issues in the session hall.

“We are currently working on everything necessary in the committees. And next time we will be able to adopt a lot. The Ukrainian parliament is set for very constructive work,” he said.

At the same time, the long break in plenary sessions has drawn criticism from some MPs. In particular, MP Yulia Klymenko announced the cancellation of one of the planned sessions shortly before its start. There is no independent confirmation of the reasons for the cancellation she gave.

MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak also criticized the duration of the pause. According to him, the period without plenary sessions may be 26 days, and the next session is scheduled for October 13.

Thus, parliamentary work during this period will continue mainly at the committee level, while plenary voting will resume later.
