The crisis in the ruling coalition in Romania is intensifying. Prime Minister Iliye Bolojan has come under fire for his tough austerity policies and problems in the interaction between his partners in power.
The Social Democrats are signaling a possible exit from the coalition, which could radically change the political balance in the country in the near future.
Ultimatum from allies
Social Democratic leader Sorin Grindeanu has announced a “new political reality” that will come at the beginning of the week. The party does not rule out a move to the opposition if their demands are not met.
The main complaints are overly strict budget restrictions and the lack of effective dialogue within the coalition.
The Prime Minister’s position
Iliye Bolojan, despite the pressure, does not demonstrate readiness to resign. He allows for the option of a minority government and emphasizes: parliamentary arithmetic leaves no simple solutions for forming a new stable majority.
This approach increases the risk of open political confrontation and a possible vote of no confidence.
Scenarios
In the event of the Social Democrats leaving the coalition, several options are possible:
the formation of a minority government,
the transition of the current government to the opposition,
or a complete reformatting of the coalition with a new prime minister.
At the same time, the legislation gives the head of government 45 days to obtain a vote of confidence, even in the event of the resignation of part of the cabinet.
Not the first crisis
Political turbulence has been going on for several months. Previously, the government came under pressure due to reforms to reduce state spending and changes in the pension system for judges and prosecutors.
The current aggravation could become decisive and determine the country’s further course – both domestically and abroad.
