The National Bank of Ukraine has introduced changes to currency regulation that allow citizens to accumulate foreign currency in accounts for subsequent payment for treatment abroad. The innovation should facilitate financial preparation for expensive medical services outside the country.

What has changed

From now on, individuals, their relatives and charitable organizations can purchase foreign currency and store it in accounts in Ukrainian banks until the full amount is collected for settlements with foreign medical institutions.

Previously, the legislation allowed for payment for treatment and related expenses without restrictions on the amount, but there was no mechanism for preliminary accumulation of funds. This created additional difficulties for those who are forced to collect significant amounts gradually.

Who is it important for

The NBU’s decision is primarily aimed at patients and their families who organize treatment abroad, as well as charitable foundations that help in raising funds.

The introduced changes allow for more flexible planning of expenses, avoidance of hasty financial transactions and timely payment for medical services.

Impact on the foreign exchange market

The National Bank emphasizes that the new rules will not have a significant impact on the foreign exchange market. This is a point-by-point solution aimed at supporting citizens in difficult life circumstances.

Thus, the NBU has taken another step towards the humanization of financial regulation, creating more convenient conditions for those who need treatment outside Ukraine.
