An explosion occurred at the headquarters of the D66 political party, led by Dutch Prime Minister Rob Yetten, in The Hague. According to police, law enforcement officers detained the suspect about an hour after the incident.
According to Dutch media, an unknown person threw a firecracker or homemade fireworks into the mail slot of the front door, which caused an explosion. Representatives of the D66 party said that it was a pyrotechnic device that caused smoke and damage to the building.
At the time of the incident, about 30 people were in the office. An event of the party’s youth wing was taking place there. No one was injured in the explosion, but those present were forced to urgently evacuate through an emergency exit.
According to the head of the Young Democrats, Rachel Smook, the explosion broke the glass at the top of the door, and the room quickly filled with smoke.
Prime Minister Rob Yetten called the incident a “cowardly act of intimidation” and stressed that in a democratic Netherlands, violence will not silence politicians.
Police have cordoned off the area around the building and are investigating. Initial reports indicate that the damage is minor, and the attacker’s motives are still being determined.
The D66 party stressed that such attacks pose a threat not only to individual political forces, but also to democratic processes in general, as the safety of citizens and their ability to participate in political life must remain guaranteed.
