Hungary’s new Prime Minister Peter Magyar has announced his readiness to personally appeal to Putin to stop the war against Ukraine. This statement was one of the first signals of a possible transformation of Budapest’s foreign policy.
After the victory of the Tisza party, Magyar announced his intention to review Hungary’s approaches to international relations, in particular to resume a constructive dialogue with the European Union and deepen cooperation with Ukraine. This position contrasts with the policy of the previous government of Viktor Orban, which for a long time remained loyal to Moscow and blocked certain EU decisions in support of Ukraine.
Magyar’s statement on the need to stop the war has already caused a wide resonance among European politicians and experts. Analysts believe that the change in Hungary’s position may affect the balance of power in the European Union, in particular in matters of sanctions policy and financial support for Ukraine.
At the same time, the new prime minister emphasized the desire to maintain pragmatic relations with all countries, emphasizing that the key priority of his government is peace and stability in the region.
For Ukraine, such signals open up new diplomatic opportunities, in particular, in terms of unblocking important decisions in the EU. At the same time, further developments will depend on the extent to which the statements of the new Hungarian leadership are supported by concrete political steps.
