Initiative involves the use of civilian resources for the security of cities

A bill was presented in the Italian Senate, which provides for the creation of a state mechanism for the transfer of decommissioned fishing nets to Ukraine to protect against drone attacks.

The initiative is aimed at using resources that are no longer used in fishing as an element of the protection of civilian infrastructure and the population.

A simple solution with a practical effect

As noted by Dmytro Shchukin, President of the Network of Associations for Ukraine (NAU), such nets are already used in Ukraine to counter drones, in particular the “Shahed” type.

According to him, the bill creates a mechanism that will stimulate enterprises to transfer decommissioned nets instead of disposing of them, which can save lives and increase the resilience of Ukrainian cities.

Political support and international context

The author of the legislative initiative is Senator Ivan Scalfarotto. It was also supported by other Italian politicians, including Senator Silvia Fregolent.

During the discussion, Anna Gordon, president of the Italian-Ukrainian association UaMI, emphasized the importance of such solutions for the protection of civilians and showed the wreckage of a drone that crashed near her family’s house.

A possible precedent for Europe

The participants in the presentation emphasized that the initiative could become an example for other European countries, initiating a new practice of using civilian materials in the security sector.

It is expected that if the bill is adopted, Italy will be able to make an additional contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and protecting civilians from drone attacks.
