The President of Poland announced the launch of the process of preparing a new version of the Basic Law, signing a decision to establish a special council. It is symbolic that the initiative was announced on May 3, on Poland’s Constitution Day, which is one of the key national holidays.

Political context: support and criticism

The council includes representatives and individuals associated with the Law and Justice (PiS) party, which supports the president. At the same time, all parliamentary forces have been invited to participate in the body’s work, but their position remains uncertain at this time.

The initiative has already sparked political debate. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has sharply criticized the idea of revising the Constitution.

“Before working on a new constitution, I would advise you to start by respecting the current one,” he said.

Legal procedure: a difficult path to change

According to Polish law, the president has the right to initiate changes to the Constitution. At the same time, their adoption requires significant parliamentary support:

at least two-thirds of the votes in the Sejm,
an absolute majority in the Senate.

Currently, both chambers are controlled by a liberal coalition that opposes the president’s political course, which significantly complicates the prospects for implementing the initiative.

What’s next: preparing an alternative draft

It is expected that the established council will work on an alternative draft of the Constitution before the end of Karol Nawrocki’s presidential term in 2030.

Thus, the initiative has not only a legal but also a strategic political nature, forming the basis for future changes in the Polish state system.
