The leader of the Hungarian party Tysa, Peter Magyar, initiates a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, which may take place by early June in Transcarpathia. The politician suggests the city of Berehove, the center of residence of the Hungarian national minority, as a symbolic place for dialogue.

The initiative was announced after negotiations with the mayor of the city, Zoltan Babiak. According to Magyar, the key goal is to “reset” Ukrainian-Hungarian relations and improve the situation of Hungarians in Transcarpathia.

The issue of minority rights as a political signal

Magyar openly calls on the Ukrainian authorities to review the language and educational policy towards national minorities. This includes, in particular,:

expanding the possibilities of using the Hungarian language in education

access to higher education in Hungarian

wider use of the language in public administration

The politician believes that such steps would meet European standards and contribute to the return of Hungarians to the region after the war.

Context: Politics and Elections

Magyar’s initiative comes against the backdrop of his political strengthening: the Tisza party recently won the parliamentary elections in Hungary. This adds weight to his statements and signals a possible more active intervention by Budapest in the issue of the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.

At the same time, the topic of language policy remains sensitive for Kyiv, as it is directly related to both internal security and European integration processes.
