Starting April 1, Ukraine introduces the annual “silence season,” which will last until June 15. During this period, special restrictions apply to protect wildlife during breeding and offspring-rearing.
The law prohibits any activities that generate excessive noise in forests, parks, and near water bodies. This includes fireworks, explosions, loud concerts, and other disturbances that may negatively impact animals.
Limits on Equipment and Human Activity
Additional restrictions also apply during this period. In particular, it is prohibited to:
- use motorized small vessels;
- operate quad bikes;
- fly drones;
- organize rallies or other noisy events;
- conduct logging or construction works in natural areas.
Citizens are also forbidden from interfering with wildlife — including touching animals, removing offspring, or destroying nests. Dogs must be kept on a leash in forested areas.
Liability and Fines
Violations of the “silence season” rules entail administrative liability under Article 39 of the Law of Ukraine “On Wildlife.”
Fines are set as follows:
- for individuals — from UAH 510 to 850;
- for officials — from UAH 850 to 1,190.
Additional Seasonal Restrictions
Traditionally, restrictions on crayfish harvesting also come into force on April 1 and will remain in effect until June 30.
The “silence season” plays a crucial role in preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance. Compliance with these rules helps protect wildlife during a sensitive period and allows citizens to avoid legal penalties.
