The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has registered a number of draft resolutions (No. 15154–15157) proposing to establish new memorable and symbolic dates in the state calendar.

The initiative covers both the events of the modern Russian-Ukrainian war and historical tragedies and the legal heritage of Ukraine.

Honoring the heroism of modern war

In particular, it is proposed to officially establish January 20 as the Day of the Ukrainian Cyborg – in honor of the defense of Donetsk Airport, which lasted 242 days and became a symbol of the invincibility of the Ukrainian military.

It is also proposed to designate April 13 as the Day of the Naval Victory of Ukraine – in honor of the destruction in 2022 of the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the missile cruiser Moskva. The event is considered an important turning point in the struggle for control of the Black Sea.

Preservation of historical memory

Special attention is paid to the tragic pages of Ukrainian history. It is proposed to establish November 3 as the Day of Remembrance of the “Shooted Renaissance” — a generation of Ukrainian artists and intellectuals repressed by the Soviet regime in the 1920s and 1930s.

Emphasis on legal tradition

Another initiative is to establish May 28 as the Day of Ukrainian Legal Tradition.

The authors emphasize that in the context of the hybrid aggression of the Russian Federation and attempts to appropriate the Ukrainian historical and legal heritage, such a date should become an important element of establishing the state subjectivity and legal identity of Ukraine.

It is expected that the adoption of these resolutions will allow systematizing the state calendar of memorable dates and strengthening the national policy of memory.
