The United States will provide Ukraine with $100 million to repair the protective confinement of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which was damaged by a Russian drone attack. This was announced by the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.
Financing the restoration work was one of the key issues discussed during the International Chernobyl Conference with the participation of international partners. According to the Ukrainian side, the total need for funds for the complete repair of the confinement is about 500 million euros.
The Minister of Energy stressed the importance of international support in ensuring nuclear and radiation safety. He expressed gratitude to the US Department of State, US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, and the American delegation for their active participation in the restoration of a critically important facility.
The damage to the containment as a result of a drone attack once again emphasizes the vulnerability of nuclear infrastructure facilities in war conditions and makes the issue of their protection relevant at the international level. The restoration of the protective structure is of key importance not only for Ukraine, but also for the whole of Europe, given the potential risks to radiation safety.
Thus, US financial assistance is an important step in strengthening the security system of the Chernobyl zone and evidence of further international solidarity in countering the consequences of Russian aggression.
