The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy of Ukraine supported draft law No. 13204-1, which should establish uniform rules for the cultivation, production and labeling of organic products in Ukraine.

The document is being prepared for a second reading. Its main goal is to strengthen state control in the field of organic production, protect consumers from unfair labeling and harmonize Ukrainian legislation with European Union norms.

“Organic” will mean truly organic

The chairman of the Agrarian Committee, Oleksandr Haidu, called the document “a key European integration bill.”

According to him, the reform should make the organic market transparent and understandable for both producers and consumers.

“The consumer will finally be confident that the inscription “organic” on the packaging indicates a truly high-quality and proven product,” Haidu emphasized.

Combating counterfeiting and new opportunities for business

The bill provides for strengthening control over the use of organic labeling and eliminating unscrupulous producers who abuse such designations.

It is expected that this will ensure fair competition in the market and increase consumer confidence in Ukrainian products.

In addition, the document should create new opportunities for the development of rural areas, job creation, and the production of products with high added value.

They want to integrate Ukrainian organics into the EU market

If adopted, the law will harmonize Ukrainian legislation with European requirements in the field of organic production.

In particular, the document provides for the implementation of the key EU regulation on organic products, which should simplify access for Ukrainian producers to the European market.

In fact, it is about creating conditions for barrier-free export of Ukrainian organic products to the European Union countries.

What else does the bill provide for

Among the new mechanisms that are planned to be introduced:

a system of traceability of products “from field to table”;
group certification for small producers;
digital registers;
a transparent system of state control.

It is expected that the new rules will help not only to improve the quality of products, but also to make the Ukrainian organic market more competitive at the international level.
