During the G7 summit, the UK will announce a new package of sanctions against Russia and expand energy support for Ukraine. The relevant decisions will be presented by the Prime Minister of the UK, Keir Starmer.

According to the British government, one of the main issues of the summit will be support for Ukraine, strengthening European security and further pressure on Russia to stop its aggression.

Keir Starmer is expected to call on G7 partners to take joint action to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. The first session of the summit will be devoted to issues of peace and security for Ukraine and the whole of Europe.

In a separate decision, London will announce a large-scale agreement in the energy sector, which should strengthen Ukraine’s energy security for the next two years. As part of the agreements, the British side will provide support through UK Export Finance in the amount of 210 million pounds sterling for the supply of nuclear fuel to the Ukrainian operator Energoatom. The supplies will be carried out by the international company Urenco.

The British government emphasizes that support is critically important for the stable operation of the Ukrainian energy system, as Energoatom provides more than half of the country’s electricity production.

In addition, the United Kingdom announces a new package of sanctions aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia. The main target of the restrictions will be the so-called Russian “shadow fleet”, which is used to circumvent international sanctions and export energy resources.

Financial networks and intermediaries involved in schemes to circumvent Western restrictions and provide the Russian military-industrial complex with the necessary resources and technologies may also fall under the sanctions.

In London, it is noted that the United Kingdom may become the first state to impose sanctions against individual vessels transporting Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), despite existing international restrictions.

The new measures also aim to cut off the supply channels of Western technology to Russia through third countries and make it more difficult to finance Russian military programs.

The UK government stresses that support for Ukraine and increased sanctions pressure on the Kremlin remain key elements of the allies’ international security policy.
