The opening of a new international checkpoint “Bila Tserkva – Sighetu-Marmației” is approaching on the Ukrainian-Romanian border. The Romanian side has officially completed the construction of a 260-meter bridge across the Tisza River, which will become a key transport artery between Transcarpathia and the Romanian region of Marmaros.

This was reported by Build Portal with reference to the press service of the Transcarpathian Regional Council.

The new bridge should ensure full-fledged movement of both passenger and freight transport through the future automobile checkpoint. It is expected that the launch of the checkpoint will significantly relieve the current crossing “Solotvyno – Sighetu-Marmației”, where there is currently a restriction for vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons.

On the Ukrainian side, work is still ongoing — builders are equipping the road infrastructure and service area for the operation of the border crossing.

The Transcarpathian region expects that the opening of the new checkpoint will contribute to the development of border communities, the creation of new jobs and the intensification of economic cooperation between Ukraine and Romania.

The agreement on the construction of the crossing between Ukraine and Romania was concluded back in 2020. Under the terms of the agreement, each side was responsible for the infrastructure on its side of the border, while Romania took on the construction of the bridge across the Tisza.

Construction started in March 2023. The total cost of the project was almost 148 million lei — more than 32 million dollars. The main part of the financing was provided by the European Union.
