Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia is gradually losing its geopolitical influence on the countries of the post-Soviet space, in particular on Armenia, Azerbaijan and Moldova. That is why, according to the head of state, the Kremlin is trying to maintain control over Ukraine at any cost, because an independent and democratic Ukraine poses the greatest political threat to the Russian regime.

The President said this in an interview with the British publication The Guardian.

Zelensky stressed that the processes of sovereignization in the region have already become irreversible. Azerbaijan, according to him, has fully maintained its independent course, Armenia is demonstrating serious changes after the last elections, and Moldova has finally strengthened its European vector of development.

“Russian political influence on other countries is decreasing. Azerbaijan – they are independent. Armenia – yesterday’s elections were a great success for the independence of Armenia. I also think that the Russians have lost Moldova. Of course, they do not want to lose Ukraine, because an independent and free Ukraine is the largest and most politically dangerous country for Russia,” the President of Ukraine said.

The Head of State is also convinced that Ukraine’s European integration could become a serious internal challenge for Russia itself. In his opinion, Ukraine’s successful example will force other nations within the Russian Federation to more actively raise questions about their own autonomy and future.

Zelensky paid special attention to the Caucasus region, which, according to him, could become one of the centers of future internal changes in the Russian Federation.

“When Ukraine joins the EU, Putin will have internal problems with different nations, especially in the Caucasus. Different nations throughout Russia will raise questions,” the President emphasized.

As we will recall, Volodymyr Zelensky earlier congratulated Armenia on holding democratic elections and declared Ukraine’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Yerevan.
