US President Donald Trump has announced the start of a large-scale economic operation against Iran, the goal of which should be the maximum financial and international isolation of Tehran. Third countries that continue to help Iran may also be threatened with sanctions.

The American president said this in a post on the social network Truth Social.

“Economic war” against Iran

Trump said that he had previously given Iran the opportunity to reach agreements with the United States, but Tehran did not take advantage of it.

Now the US president has announced what he called “the most destructive economic operation” ever carried out against an individual state.

According to him, this is an economic war and isolation of Iran “of an unprecedented scale”.

Tehran’s partners may be under attack

Trump addressed a separate warning to states that continue to cooperate with Iran.

The American president said that countries that allow their banks, companies, airports or government agencies to support Iran could face large-scale economic consequences.

In fact, Washington is signaling its intention to put pressure not only on Tehran directly, but also on foreign structures that help it support foreign economic and financial transactions.

Oil, transfers and shell companies

Among the areas that the United States intends to block, Trump named smuggling of Iranian oil, swap lines, money transfers, operations through exchange offices, the use of ship registers and shell companies.

The US president said that all these mechanisms of support for Iran “must stop now”.

He also called on American allies to join the campaign to economically isolate Tehran. Trump called the new stage of pressure “economic D-Day”.

Tensions over Iran are rising

The new statement came amid an escalation of tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s key oil export routes.

On August 12, Trump declared that the United States had full control of the Strait of Hormuz. Before that, the American president claimed that the US military had cleared it of mines and controlled it “100%.”

Iran denied these claims.

Now Washington is shifting the confrontation to the economic sphere. Judging by Trump’s statement, the new strategy involves not only direct pressure on Iran, but also an attempt to limit its ability to conduct international financial and trade transactions through third countries as much as possible.
